Team USA and Canada are headed to overtime in the gold medal game. A thrilling third period will be followed by white-knuckle 3-on-3 action.

Canada controlled much of the third period, which ended with a frenzy. The United States and Canada exchanged power play opportunities, but neither side was able to bury a goal. Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington were exceptional at both ends of the ice, and this game is headed to overtime as a result.

The Americans were treading water for much of the final 20 minutes, so they’ll probably be happy to see overtime. Canada has a speed advantage, so the 3-on-3 format probably suits it better than Team USA, but all it will take is one mistake to end this game.

Matt Boldy has the lone goal for the United States, and Cale Makar has the tally for Canada. Who will become the hero — and a national icon — in overtime?

The Canadians are going for their third straight gold medal with NHL players at the Olympics, and the Americans are looking for their first since 1980.
