Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson is now an Olympic gold medalist after the United States beat Canada 2-1 in overtime in the gold medal final on Sunday.
Jack Hughes scored 1:41 into overtime, claiming the nation’s third men’s title at the Games and its first since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980.
Despite his foot being injured in Friday’s game against Slovakia, Thompson did play in Sunday’s game.
Thompson leads the Sabres in goals (30) and points (59) this season.
Thompson helped the U.S. win the world hockey championship last May for the first time since 1933, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime over Switzerland. He scored six goals in the tournament.
