Team USA is adding one more gold to its collection from the 2026 Winter Olympics. Just like the women’s team on Thursday, Team USA men’s hockey picked up a 2-1 overtime win over Team Canada to secure its first Olympic gold medal since 1980, 46 years to the day after the Miracle on Ice.

Jack Hughes scored the golden goal in overtime at 1:41 to give the US top honors in both men’s and women’s hockey.

How It Happened

Team USA struggled to get shots on goal early in the first, but scored first at the six-minute mark of the period. Matt Boldy split the defensive pairing of Cale Makar and Devon Toews before beating Jordan Binnington to make it 1-0. Shots were even, 8-8, after 20 minutes.

Team Canada dominated the second period, but USA held the one-goal lead through most of the period. The US killed off a 5-on-3 for 1:33 to stay in front. But Canada finally broke through with the tying goal with 1:44 left in the period, when Makar fired a shot from the right circle past Connor Hellebuyck. Canada had a 27-16 lead in shots through two periods.

Shots in the third period were 14-10 Canada. Both teams had late power plays, including a four-minute man-advantage for USA cut short by a high-sticking minor on Jack Hughes.

Hughes more than made up for it in overtime. Zach Werenski won a race for a loose puck and centered for Hughes, who scored through the five-hole of Binnington for the game-winner.

⭐ Connor Hellebuyck — Simply sensational. Hellebuyck stopped 41 of 42 shots against the high-powered Canadian offense on the way to winning gold.

⭐⭐ Jack Hughes — The overtime hero with the golden goal, Jack Hughes’ fourth goal of the Olympics was a historic one for US hockey.

⭐⭐⭐ Cale Makar — The lone goal for Team Canada came from its top defenseman. Makar also led the way with 24:32 of ice time for Canada.

The Takeaway

For the first time in 46 years, Team USA has Olympic gold. It took a scrappy effort, stellar goaltending, and embracing the physicality that has come with these games over the years.

This win was for the 1980 Miracle team, the last to reach the Olympic mountaintop. It was also a win for those who have represented the US, but didn’t get to see it, notably Johnny Gaudreau, who was still part of the celebration and on the minds of the entire US roster.
