Following the Maple Leafs’ overtime loss in Game 4, head coach Craig Berube called out Max Domi for taking a bad penalty that aided the Senators in beating the LeafsCraig Berube identified special teams as the difference in Game 4, noting that the Leafs couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities while the Senators not only scored on the power-play but also managed to score short-handed.

“It’s not a good one. He knows that. His emotions got a little too high there and involved. That’s one he knows he can’t take and our team doesn’t want to take.”

Domi himself didn’t take any offense to his coach’s critique of the situation. Quite the opposite, actually — Domi agreed with Berube’s assessment of the situation.

“It’s obviously unfortunate. You’re getting into a battle like that. Sometimes it’s just a little bit of a reaction to kind of throw that. You don’t want to hit the guy in the face. I certainly didn’t mean to do that.”

Throughout the entire series, Berube has been preaching discipline and unfortunately, Domi’s lack of discipline led to the Leafs falling behind for the second consecutive game.

Despite a lackluster regular season, the 30-year-old has played very well through the first four games of the playoffs, including scoring the overtime winner in Game 2. No one faults Domi for being an emotional player, but sometimes he needs a reminder to play between the whistles and not after them.

With two days off until Game 5 on Tuesday, the Leafs will have time to refocus in the hopes of advancing past the first round for just the second time in the Auston Matthews era.
