The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly not interested in signing a veteran forward who was recently placed on unconditional waivers and has his contract terminated by San Jose.

After declaring their intentions to rebuild back in January, the Vancouver Canucks are continuing to look for ways to improve their roster, both in the short-term and long-term, with getting younger a priority for GM Patrik Allvin and President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford.

“But prior to this, we already made the decision that we were going to go with younger players. Over the past few years, our staff has done a good job and we have a number of good young players, whether they’re in our lineup now or close to getting in our lineup. And those players are going to get a chance to play. Based on the circumstances with this team, this is the year to do it. The fact of the matter is we’re in a rebuild.” Rutherford said about the direction the Vancouver Canucks are heading in.

Prioritizing youth amid this initial phase of the rebuild is a great idea, there’s no questioning that, however the Canucks do need to have the right veterans in place to insolate the younger players and for them to look up to for guidance and advice.

“Jeff Skinner (SJ) on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination.” Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman said last Monday.

Now that Jeff Skinner is a free agent much earlier than expected, many are wondering what his next move will be and given their prior interest in him dating back to the summer of 2024, some have been curious if the Vancouver Canucks would try to sign him.

The link between Jeff Skinner and the Vancouver Canucks is clear and that’s Jim Rutherford, who drafted the Toronto native with the seventh overall pick in 2010 when he was the General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes.

After four seasons of 15+ goals, Skinner struggled offensively this season with the San Jose Sharks, registering 13 points (six goals, seven assists), along with 14 penalty minutes and was a minus-eight in 32 games.
