VOORHEES, N.J. – For one last time before the Olympic break ends, the Philadelphia Flyers held practice at the Flyers Training Center before they head down to Washington D.C. for their date with the Capitals.
Dan Vladar had already returned from the Olympics, and Rasmus Ristolainen joined him and the Flyers on the ice on Tuesday. Travis Sanheim was not a participant at practice, but returned as practice ended, and will travel with the team to Washington, where it is expected that he will play.
Rick Tocchet was not at practice, and per assistant coach Todd Reirden, will either join them before the trip to DC, or meet them there this evening.
Practice was not short, but not long either. They started the practice with some shooting work from the slot, followed by some rushes and power play work. Practice ended with some small area work, with a 3v3 drill with nets on either end of the neutral zone.

For what is was worth, the first unit was the one in front of us, the second unit was on the far side of the ice. The second unit is a mixture of what I could see, but also inference based on the units prior to the break.
Notes from practice
Matvei Michkov looked really, really good. That feels like an understatement. He spoke to the media after practice, which I’ll dive into a little later. One thing he said was that he felt lighter on the ice, and he looked like it. He had a good week at practice, and it will be fun to watch him in the first game back.
Dan Vladar did not. He showed his frustration with it too. All things considered, I’d say he gets a slight pass with the long travel to and from Milan. It’s not excuse, players going to the Olympics knew there would be little to no break, but it can certainly be expected. That does make me wonder if Ersson will get game one, since it’s a back to back. He also did not play all that much, so maybe there was a bit of rust still to knock off.
It certainly seems like Trevor Zegras is going to start the final stint of the season back on the wing. He was playing some of his best career hockey earlier in the year, so it’ll be interesting to see if he picks back up. He practiced on the top line all week.
With that, the Flyers don’t have a 4C now, with Sean Couturier back in the top 9. Carl Grundstrom practiced in that role, but he is not a center. Adam Ginning is still on the roster, but if he does not play a game, he can go back down to the AHL without waivers. This makes me wonder about guys like Lane Pederson, Phil Tomasino, or maybe even Karsen Dorwart, getting called up to the big club.
Rasmus Ristolainen spoke about the Olympic experience, saying he thought he played well, and that it wasn’t just one experience, but the whole thing that he’ll always remember, getting to do it with guys he grew up. He also mentioned that he roomed with Mikko Rantanen at the Olympic Village.
The Flyers are back in action on Wednesday when they take on the Washington Capitals at 7:00 p.m. EST.
