The New England Patriots managed to blow their preseason expectations out of the water in 2025 by going on a run all the way to Super Bowl LX. And yet, their loss to the Seattle Seahawks showed that the team has several areas of need to address this offseason. One of those areas is the offensive line, and an All-Pro left tackle, Trent Williams, could fall right into the Patriots‘ lap.

Williams is one of the best left tackles in NFL history, and he is fresh off earning his 12th Pro Bowl selection and a spot on the All-Pro Second Team in 2025 with the San Francisco 49ers. According to a recent report, though, the Niners are struggling to find common ground on a restructured contract with Williams, which could lead to him hitting the open market.

“With five-time All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams scheduled to carry a $39 million cap number this season, he and the 49ers currently are struggling to find a contractual solution, per league sources,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in a post on X. “If the two sides can’t bridge their differences in their standoff, Williams would be expected to join this year’s free-agent class, making him one of the premier players available.”

Will Campbell was New England’s left tackle last season after getting selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he was awful throughout the team’s playoff run. Could the team consider signing Williams and shifting Campbell to left guard, despite publicly saying they wouldn’t do that this offseason?

There aren’t many players who’d be worth doing that for, but Williams is one of them, even though he turns 38 in July. And yet, Williams has shown no signs of decline, and even if he only plays for a season or two, that could give New England some time to figure out its long-term plan at left tackle. It’d certainly be a bold move, but if Williams becomes available, New England would have to at least consider making him an offer.
