GENEVA — Kelly Howe scored 56 seconds into overtime as the fourth-seeded William Smith women’s hockey team rallied to defeat fifth-seeded SUNY Canton, 3-2, on Wednesday night in a SUNYAC first-round playoff game at The Cooler Arena.
Bella Hacker generated the tying goal with 29.7 seconds remaining in regulation for the Herons (12-14).
Goalie Mia Iwicki totaled 20 saves to record the win for William Smith.
After Kylah Small provided the Kangaroos with a 1-0 lead 7:11 into the game, Finley Crosby tied the game with a tally 2:14 into the second period.
Danika Lalonde then scored 3:03 into the third period to restore the lead for SUNY Canton (13-9-4). Hacker followed with the tying tally with Iwicki pulled for an extra attacker.
Goalie Molly Lenihan finished with 27 saves for SUNY Canton.
SUNY CORTLAND 4, SUNY POTSDAM 1
Fanny Aneborn recorded a natural hat trick to spark the third-seeded Red Dragons past the sixth-seeded Bears in a first-round SUNYAC playoff game in Cortland.
Grace Karakas also scored for SUNY Cortland (15-7-4) and goalie Eline Gillodes made 15 saves in the win for SUNY Cortland.
Sophia Leas tallied a goal for SUNY Potsdam.
After Leas scored 6:23 into the game to open the scoring, Aneborn followed with the tying goal 9:30 into the frame.
Aneborn scored the go-ahead goal 23 seconds into the second period and also scored 7:09 into the period.
Goalie Magalie Parent totaled 14 stops for SUNY Potsdam (11-13-2).
SUNY CORTLAND 2, SUNY CANTON 0
Goalie Noah Suggs made 18 saves to post the shutout as the fourth-seeded Red Dragons blanked the fifth-seeded Kangaroos in a SUNYAC quarterfinal in Cortland.
With the game scoreless heading into the third period, Sam Christiano scored the deciding goal with 9:10 remaining in regulation and Thomas Rockey added a goal with 1:52 left for SUNY Cortland (14-11-1).
Goalie Trey Miller finished with 30 stops for SUNY Canton (12-13-1).
ST. LAWRENCE 13, SUNY CORTLAND 12
Patrick Murray scored a man-up goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the No. 11-ranked Saints to a triumph against the No. 10-ranked Red Dragons in a nonleague game in Canton.
Cam Croasdaile scored a go-ahead goal with 3:22 left for St. Lawrence before Mason Carroll tied the game with 35 seconds remaining for SUNY Cortland.
Jamie Rosenzweig generated three goals and two assists for the Saints, Nathan Coghlin scored a pair of goals, and Daniel Mahoney contributed a goal and three assists. Goalie Rafferty Callahan made 12 saves for St. Lawrence.
Sean Kavanagh totaled eight points, including six assists, Nick Stoecker scored three goals and assisted on another, and Stefan Swedlund tallied three goals for SUNY Cortland.
Goalie Charlie Falowski made 30 saves in taking the loss for the Red Dragons.
SUNY CANTON 12, VERMONT STATE-CASTLETON 10
Eli Bullock supplied three goals and two assists and Brady Frost scored three goals as the Kangaroos won their season opener by outlasting the Spartans in a nonleague game at St. Lawrence University.
Jonney Mclear and Charles Grandaw each contributed two goals and an assist for SUNY Canton. Goalie Hayden Todd totaled 14 saves for the Kangaroos.
Carter Frankenhoff scored four goals to pace the Spartans (1-1) and goalie Finn Maniaci finished with 13 stops.
ST. JOHN FISHER 18, CLARKSON 7
Junior Gabby Cranfield supplied two goals and two assists to reach the 100-point plateau for her career, but the Golden Knights got off to a slow start in a season-opening loss against the 11th-ranked Cardinals in a nonleague game in Potsdam.
Dharma Makarowsky provided four goals and two assists for St. John Fisher (1-1) and Chloe Scanlan scored three goals.
Goalie Maggie Cross only had to make five saves to post the win for St. John Fisher.
Sydney Nakas scored a pair of goals for Clarkson and Cassin, Makenna tallied a goal and an assist.
Jennaca McGill didn’t record a save in 12:51 of work, allowing seven goals in taking the loss for the Golden Knights and teammate Riley Donovan came on and made six stops.
