Robby Fabbri was one of five players placed on waivers Sunday, and he could be in for a reunion with Craig Berube if the Maple Leafs decide to be sellers.

On Sunday, the NHL had a bit of a roster shuffling as four players hit the waiver wire as teams prepare for the trade deadline which is less than a week away. Andrew Mangiapane and Alec Regula were placed by the Oilers meanwhile Luke Kunin and Guillaume Brisbois were sent there by Florida and Vancouver respectively.

But one name who also popped up on the wire was St. Louis Blues forward Robby Fabbri, who has appeared sparingly this season in his second stint with the Blues after spending three years with the team from 2015-2018.

Toronto could sign Robby Fabbri as a cost-effective body for end of the season

He’s a player who could be a cheap veteran option up front, especially for a selling team who would prefer to have NHL-ready bodies in the lineup; and that certainly sounds like the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Toronto very well could be in the mix for Fabbri and with the Craig Berube connection it makes sense. Though, there are questions about how long Berube is going to be sticking around, if they give him a vote of confidence then what’s the harm?

He’s a solid two-way bottom-six forward who can score a bit too. In 457 games he has 220 points (107 goals, 113 assists) while adding 558 hits and 215 PIM with St. Louis, Detroit, and Anaheim though only has four points in 15 games this year (1 goal, 3 assists).

He makes the league minimum right now, and there’s no reason why Toronto couldn’t bring him in for the next 20 games to at least give them some competitiveness and familiarity.

If the Maple Leafs get rid of names like Scott Laughton, Calle Jarnkrok, and potentially Nic Roy, the team is going to need some pivots to fill the void; and there are only so many Jacob Quillan’s to go around.

Teams like Toronto will no doubt also be fighting for Fabbri if they so choose, and he is a Stanley Cup winner so there’s always that edge when it comes to the playoffs.

But we’ll see what the next 24 hours brings, as the Maple Leafs could be waiting to bring back an old friend for Craig Berube while shipping out a third of the roster in the meantime.
