Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers made some minor headlines on Sunday, making an AHL trade with the Minnesota Wild. Philly swapped the recently acquired defenseman Roman Schmidt for forward Boris Katchouk.

Katchouk is a former second-round pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning, who was once a legitimate prospect, and has turned into a solid AHLer, but not much more. He has 179 NHL games under his belt, 15 goals, and 36 total career points.

The Flyers landed a veteran with some potential. However, this trade was likely because Schmidt was never able to really find his spot in the Phantoms lineup. With a crowded blueline group in Lehigh, the Flyers likely just wanted to add some more forward depth and a veteran with some NHL experience.

Katchouk will report straight to the Phantoms.

NHL trade rumors & news

Let’s start with the big news from Sunday.

NHL.com: The Los Angeles Kings have fired head coach Jim Hiller. D.J. Smith will take over as the interim head coach. L.A., while out of the playoffs as of now, remains in the picture, but the season is not getting the results they had hoped for, leading to the change behind the bench.

It felt like this had been talked about for a long while, even going back to the early stages of the season. Now, no more speculation. The change has been made.

TSN: The Toronto Maple Leafs have not been having a good year. Maybe Mitch Marner was not the issue? With the season going downhill, it looks like the Leafs will be sellers at the deadline. Craig Button urges Toronto not to retool, but rather to strip it down and rebuild.

Toronto Hockey Now: Speaking of the Leafs, it’s been a rude awakening for captain Auston Matthews since returning from the Olympics. The Leafs have lost three straight games, with Matthews calling the latest loss “embarrassing.” Next up for Toronto: the Flyers.

Carolina Hockey Now: Could a reunion happen in Raleigh? The Carolina Hurricanes have been looking to upgrade down the middle, especially from Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Vincent Torcheck is very much available. Could he return to Carolina?

Detroit Hockey Now: We have two Motor City links today. The first is Elias Pettersson’s name back on the trade market. Detroit is among the potential suitors. So, Kevin Allen broke down what the Red Wings could give up in a trade.

Link No. 2: The Red Wings have been linked to Flyers’ defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. They could be a very good trade partner for the Flyers. However, Ristolainen is not the only player they’re looking at. What other defensemen are on the Red Wings’ radar?
