A Vancouver Canucks’ completed trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins last summer has proved that General Manager Patrik Allvin has made a big mistake in the goaltending department.

“We would like thank Arturs for everything he has done for the hockey club, including helping Abbotsford win the Calder Cup. We wanted to give him an opportunity elsewhere as we feel we are very well positioned in goal at the NHL, AHL and developmental level. Acquiring a future pick and depth forward will add to our organizational depth.” Patrik Allvin said following the trade.

There’s no question that Kevin Lankinen and Thatcher Demko are loved in this market, but it’s also safe to say that the Vancouver Canucks rushed their decision to sign both to contract extensions within a four-month span.

This season hasn’t gone as the Vancouver Canucks were hoping and their goaltending has suffered as a result, with the club allowing a league-worst 218 goals, ten more than the second-worst team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 33 appearances this season, Kevin Lankinen has a 3.69 goals against average and an .874 save percentage, while Thatcher Demko, who is done for the season after undergoing hip surgery, had an .897 save percentage in 20 games.

Meanwhile, Arturs Silovs has been given a big opportunity in Pittsburgh to prove that he’s capable of being a full-time goaltender in the National Hockey League and on Sunday, stopped all 22 shots he faced to shut out the Vegas Golden Knights.

“Silovs with 13 wins this season.

Lankinen (7) and Demko (8) have combined for 15. Tolopilo has 3.

Silovs on pace to have 18 wins in 39GP, Lankinen on pace for 10 wins in 46GP.

Silovs on pace to have the same amount of wins as Demko/Lankinen combined, in 20 less games. #Canucks” Grady Sas said on X.

The departure of Arturs Silovs left a big hole, there’s no doubt about that, but thankfully the organization has a few other netminders that could be deemed “the future” after the Canucks initiated plans to rebuild and get younger.

Nikita Tolopilo has already left an impact on Canucks fans and will almost certainly be part of this group for many years to come, but another name to keep an eye on is their 2025 second round pick Aleksei Medvedev, who is currently suiting up for the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League.
