Math teacher Kathleen Petruska, the St. Louis Blues and Ameren have teamed up to educate Parkway South Middle students about off-the-ice careers within the National Hockey League.

Last month, Petruska’s students kicked off the school’s involvement with “Future Goals: Hockey Careers Beyond the Ice,” a program of the NHL and the St. Louis Blues. The program, powered by Everfi, offers an up-close look at the science, mathematics, engineering and technology that go into the game.

“The way the Everfi program works is they allow kids to kind of see the different ways that jobs are promoted through the NHL, not just the hockey players on the ice, but also the maintenance crews creating those opportunities for the players to skate on the ice, as well as our fan engagement, like when they have a mascot,” Petruska said. “They have all these fun opportunities that allow the students to engage in new ways. So it’s a great opportunity for them to see what types of jobs are out there other than being a player on the ice.”

During the launch, students had the pleasure of visiting with St. Louis Blues Hall of Famer Barret Jackman and the Blues’ mascot, Louie.
