The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Nashville Predators to begin the month of March for the team. March has recently been the bane of the Red Wings’ Stanley Cup playoff existence. The Red Wings have not made the Stanley Cup playoffs for nine seasons in a row. After this game, the Red Wings will play 13 more games in the month of March. The Red Wings were lucky to hear that Starting goalie John Gibson avoided injury after leaving the game with what head coach Todd McLellan called a stinger.

John Gibson Avoids Injury Against Nashville

Gibson started the game against the Predators but only played one period. Gibson was removed from the game after one period with an upper-body injury. In the period he saw, Gibson allowed one goal on 11 shots. Veteran backup goalie Cam Talbot won the game for the Red Wings, allowing one goal on 19 shots. Talbot has a record of 11-8-4 in 25 games started for the Red Wings this season with a 3.08 goals-against average and an .890 save percentage.

Acquired from the Anaheim Ducks during the offseason, Gibson struggled to begin his tenure with the Red Wings, but has been one of the best goalies in the league since December. In that time, Gibson has won 19 games and has a .925 save percentage and four shutouts. Gibson is the most talented goalie the Red Wings have had on their roster since Jimmy Howard. The Red Wings drafted Howard with the 64th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Gibson, leaving the game against the Predators, shows how much a team relies not only on its starting goalie but also on a capable backup goalie.

NHL Trade Deadline is March 6th at 3:00 PM

The NHL’s trade deadline is on March 6th at 3:00 PM, and the Red Wings are in a position to add to their roster to make a playoff push at the deadline. This is not unfamiliar territory for the Red Wings, as last season, the Red Wings were in a position to add at the trade deadline, but general manager Steve Yzerman said that the team that could lead the Red Wings franchise back to the Stanley Cup playoffs was in the room. One name that the Red Wings are linked with is Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson. Pettersson has scored 13 goals and added 22 assists in 51 games for the Canucks, who are in last place in the Pacific Division this season.
