The Flyers are making things interesting.
They beat the Maple Leafs, 3-2, in a shootout Monday night at Scotiabank Arena.
Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras delivered in the skills competition for the Flyers, who improved to 9-11 after regulation.
Christian Dvorak and Noah Cates provided the Flyers’ regulation goals.
Dan Vladar continued to be ultra reliable in net.
The Flyers (28-21-11) matched their season-best winning streak of three games. It’s the third time they’ve won three in a row.
Rick Tocchet’s club has earned at least a point in six of its last seven games (4-1-2).
The Flyers were able to beat Toronto without their leading scorer Travis Konecny, who missed the game because of an upper-body injury. More on his status here.
They also didn’t have Nick Seeler for the third period as the defenseman suffered a lower-body injury. If Seeler has to miss time, we’ll see if that changes how Danny Briere views Rasmus Ristolainen at the trade deadline. More on that here.
The Flyers went 1-1-1 in their regular-season series with the Maple Leafs (27-24-10).
Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras scored two nasty goals in the shootout, and Dan Vladar denies Max Domi to give the Flyers a win.
• With the Bruins being idle, the Flyers moved to within four points of the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card spot. They have 22 games left and just one more before Friday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline.
The Flyers now go two days without a game. Boston will draw even with the Flyers in games played Tuesday night when it hosts the Penguins. It’s a crowded playoff picture in the East.
While the Flyers were never expected to be buyers at the deadline, they didn’t want to be major sellers, either. They didn’t consider this to be a playoffs-or-bust season, but they didn’t envision more significant subtraction.
This mini run doesn’t hurt the Flyers’ chances of at least staying together the rest of the way.
When the Flyers return to action, they’ll have to prove they can do something that they haven’t done in over two years, and that’s win four straight. The last time they did that was Feb. 6-12 of the 2023-24 season.
• Vladar surrendered two or fewer goals for the 23rd time in 35 starts this season.
He converted 29 saves on 31 shots and really carried the Flyers in the second period.
The 28-year-old had a rare blemish late in third period when he couldn’t cover a loose puck about six seconds before Toronto tied the game at 2-2 on the power play.
But Vladar made up for it. He stopped four shots in overtime, including a point-blank look from Auston Matthews. He also denied Matthews and Max Domi in the shootout.
Anthony Stolarz, the former Flyers goaltender, made 23 saves on 25 shots for the Maple Leafs.
After the Flyers fell behind 1-0 for the 40th time this season, Dvorak tied things up on the power play before first intermission. Cates, who had a two-point effort, gave the Flyers the lead in the third period.
• The Flyers are back in action Thursday when they host the Mammoth (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
