The Utah Mammoth have been involved of plenty of trade deadline rumors already.
Turns out, it took the Calgary Flames and MacKenzie Weegar to make a rumor into reality.
TSN’s Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday, “Hearing Utah and Calgary are closing in on a MacKenzie Weegar deal that awaits his approval.”
It’s not yet clear what would go the other direction from the Mammoth to the Flames.
TSN’s Nick Kypreos wrote earlier this week about why Weegar was a solid target.
“MacKenzie Weegar is a very interesting name to watch here,” Kypreos writes. “With right-handed defencemen in such high demand, teams are calling about him. Weegar has five years left on a contract paying $6.25 million against the cap, but he has a no-trade clause until after next season, when it changes to a 10-team no-trade list.”

Weegar is 32 years old and a right-shot defenseman, which is one of the most valued commodities of this deadline season.
This season, Weegar has played in 60 games and has three goals and 18 assists.
In his 10-year NHL career between the Panthers and Flames, Weegar has played 610 games, totaled 62 goals and dished out 210 assists. He also has 1,135 career blocked shots and 1,345 career hits.
He’s done incredibly well for himself after being a seventh-round pick of the Panthers in 2013 out of a junior career with the Halifax Mooseheads.
And now, Weegar is on the verge of joining the Mammoth, as long as he gives his approval.
