Reportedly, the Calgary Flames are continuing their retool philosophy as they make a major move today. The Calgary Flames have news to announce as MacKenzie Weegar is involved in a trade. The Flames have shipped the skilled and competitive d-man to the Utah Mammoth. In exchange, Calgary receives Olli Maatta. Moreover, MacKenzie Weegar was a key part to the Calgary Flames blueline. Now, he will look to carry that over to Salt Lake City. The hold up on the deal, is that Weegar must waive his no-trade clause to go to Utah. Therefore, it is up in the air until he makes that call.
Also today: hearing Utah and Calgary are closing in on a MacKenzie Weegar deal that awaits his approval.

MacKenzie Weegar is the Centrepiece to a Calgary Flame Trade Today
Weegar has been the target of trade rumours for sometime. However, the uncertainty was caused by him being a very good player, and one the Calgary would want to keep. Even to this day, the Flames are competitive in the Western Conference, so a trade like this keeps them on a rebuild path. They have their eyes set on two-to-three years down the road.
The fact that Calgary traded him is that they must believe they received major return in the process. Calgary could have used Weegar for a rebuild or right now, based on his contract term. He isn’t due for free agency until 2031 summer. Weegar would have been fine for Calgary to keep. He was a player that had a contract that would have allowed him to remain in Cow Town, long term, through the rebuild. Now, that will be the case for the Mammoth, as they see him as a long-term solution, but unlike in Calgary, right now.
Weegar’s Game
It is an interesting aspect of Weegar’s game is that he is a right-hand shot, but he is strong as a left defence. In any sense, he is very versatile, and useful to a team trying to compete. This season he has 21 points through 60 games, and plays over 23 minutes a night.
This will be a big boost to the Mammoth blueline, that was one that could have used a boost to the two-or-three spot on their defence core. The trade does exactly that. It will be great at insulating their defence, and helping to win the matchup game. With players like Mikhail Sergachev and John Marino logging the most important minutes, Weegar will slide right in there. Big move by Utah as they put a push on for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Maatta is a solid pickup for Calgary. Even though he might even admit he has had an underwhelming career to this point, that doesn’t make it any less to be proud of. By the time he turned 23, he had played 56 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, and won two cups. Okay. He is athletic and provides excellent veteran leadership. At 31 now, he could player four or five more years, and guide the young Flames group through the process.
Olli Maatta is part of the deal going to #Flames from Utah for Mackenzie Weegar.
