The Dallas Stars struck big shortly before the NHL trade deadline with their acquisition of Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers.
The longtime NHL veteran and native Texan joins the Stars as they set out on the home stretch of the season prior to what they hope will be a long playoff run.
Here are five things to know about Myers, the newest (and now, officially, the tallest) Dallas Star.

1. The basics
Name: Tyler Paul Myers
Born: Feb. 1, 1990
Hometown: Houston
Position: Defenseman
Height/weight: 6-8, 229 pounds
2. Texas welcome
When Myers takes the ice for the Stars, he’ll be the first player in franchise history born in the state of Texas to appear in a Stars regular season game.
Myers was asked about his return to Texas shortly after the trade on Wednesday.
“I was born in Texas, I have some family ties still down in Texas,” Myers said. “So that was very exciting. Just one of the reasons why Dallas was a preference. We’re incredibly excited to be joining the team, and already a great team. And very excited to get back down south again.”
3. Goes way back with Jamie Benn
Myers is 36 years old and a 17-year veteran in the NHL.
Stars captain Jamie Benn 36 years old and a 17-year veteran in the NHL.
And somehow their relationship predates their time in the league.
Myers and Benn have known each other since 2007 when they were teammates in juniors for the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. They also played together for the Candian junior team in the 2009 World Junior Championships.
Myers said Wednesday that Benn is “one of those friends you keep in touch with even when you don’t see each other.”
“We’ve talked throughout the entirety of our careers, checking in every once in a while,” Myers said of Benn. “Obviously a lot more in the last week [leading up to the trade]. I’m excited to join him again, see if we can do something special together.”
4. Half-brother of a former Maverick
Myers is the half-brother former Dallas Maverick Quentin Grimes, subject of the second-worst trade the Mavs made in 2025.
Myers’ mom, Tonja Stelly, gave birth to the two future athletes 10 years apart. Grimes told The Athletic in 2024 that watching his older brother achieve success at such a high level helped lay a path for his own success.
Grimes averaged 10.2 points per game in one season with the Mavericks but saw a sharp uptick to 21.9 PPG virtually the moment Dallas traded him to the 76ers.
With Myers measuring at 6-8, it sounds like he could’ve easily gotten into basketball as well.
5. Classic nickname
That towering stature along with Myers’ flashy, sometimes unpredictable play style earned him one of the best nicknames in hockey during his seven seasons in Vancouver.
The Chaos Giraffe.
Canucks fans spent Wednesday posting tributes to the Chaos Giraffe as he now heads to Dallas.
