It has been an interesting couple of days for the Buffalo Sabres and their potential additions at the deadline. They were the talk around the league when they were rumoured to be in on Colton Parayko. The St. Louis Blues defenceman ultimately said no to the potential trade using his no-trade clause. Now, the Sabres have pivoted to other defencemen in hopes of improving their roster, in Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn. In return, the Winnipeg Jets have acquired Jacob Bryson, Isak Rosen, a 2027 second-round draft pick, and a conditional 2026 fourth-round draft pick. The condition on the pick is the better of the Buffalo or Edmonton fourth-round pick. Additionally, the Jets are retaining half of Luke Schenn‘s salary, which is $1.375 million.

Buffalo Sabres Acquire Two Big Defencemen In Trade
The Sabres are acquiring defencemen with size to strengthen their back end. Logan Stanley is a large, physical defenceman. He is one of the tallest players in the league, standing at 6-foot-7. He was in the midst of a career year with the Winnipeg Jets, recording nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 59 games this season. In his previous five seasons with the Jets, he had never recorded more than one goal in any of those seasons. For the Jets, they are selling high here, and for the Sabres, they are betting on Stanley to continue producing as he has. Stanley has a $1.25 million cap hit until the end of the current season.
Luke Schenn is a veteran, depth defender at this stage of his career, and a good locker room guy. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, winning with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021. He has one goal and six assists through 46 games this season with the Jets. Schenn has a plethora of NHL experience, playing 1,118 games in the NHL, recording 212 points in the process across nine different teams.
Winnipeg Jets Are Embracing Their Retool Process
Winnipeg has had a very disappointing year. They won the President’s Trophy last season, but this season, they are likely to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs. By obtaining the two draft picks, they are getting key pieces for the future, and they will hope for a quick turnaround next season.
The Jets also added two players in this deal. Jacob Bryson played 35 games for the Sabres this season, recording two goals and three assists for five points. He is a 28-year-old on a deal of $900,000, expiring this season. Isak Rosen was the 14th overall selection in the 2021 NHL Draft for Buffalo. He recorded three goals and four assists for seven points in 16 games this season. These two defencemen can be depth additions for the Jets to plug the hole that Stanley and Schenn have left.
The 2025-26 NHL Trade Deadline is quickly approaching, and news will be bountiful in the hours ahead. Our team at Last Word On Hockey will look to keep you updated with the latest developments.
