The Vancouver Canucks have made an announcement regarding Swedish defenseman Marcus Pettersson as the 2025 IIHF World Championship comes to a close.After 16 days of some incredible international hockey, the 2025 IIHF World Championship wrapped up in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday with the Bronze and Gold Medal Games featuring a trio of Vancouver Canucks – Marcus Pettersson, Drew O’Connor and Conor Garland.Up first on Sunday was Marcus Pettersson, who was suiting up for Sweden in back-to-back years at the IIHF World Championship and while it might not have been the finish he was hoping for, the Canucks blueliner will return to Vancouver with some hardware.

In the Bronze Medal Game on Sunday, Sweden was taking on the other co-host, Denmark, who were guaranteed their best-ever finish at the IIHF World Championship after they defeated Canada in the Quarterfinals on Thursday and lost to Switzerland in the Semis yesterday.

The Danes had a strong first period, holding off the Swedes before Marcus Pettersson’s squad took control in the middle frame, scoring three goals to take a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Sweden would go on to score another three goals in the third period and would defeat Denmark 6-2, claiming their second consecutive bronze medal at the IIHF World Championship and 19th in their history.

“Back-to-back bronze! 🥉👏” the IIHF said on X.

In a social media post on Sunday morning, the Vancouver Canucks congratulated Marcus Pettersson for winning the bronze medal with the Swedes, which marks his second medal with the Men’s National Team.

“Congratulations to Marcus Pettersson and Team Sweden on winning the bronze medal at the 2025 IIHF World Championship! 🥉” the Canucks said.

Pettersson, a native of Skelleftea, finished the 2025 IIHF World Championship with four assists, eight shots on goal and was a plus-nine in ten games for Sweden while averaging 17:35 of ice time.

His strong showing at the IIHF World Championship will certainly give Marcus Pettersson an inside track of making Sweden’s roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Milano-Cortina, Italy next February.
