The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has made a decision on Senators defenseman Artem Zub‘s head shot on the Leafs forward John Tavares.Moments into overtime on Saturday, Leafs centre John Tavares was hit in the head by Sens defenseman Artem Zub while the puck was nowhere near him, leaving Leafs Nation up in arms over the lack of a penalty on the play.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety did not issue a fine or hearing for Zub on Sunday or Monday, indicating that he won’t be facing any supplemental discipline for his hit.

Following Leafs’ practice Monday, head coach Craig Berube was asked about the hit and he made his feelings very clear.

“I don’t like the hit. Puck is nowhere near him. Looked like a head shot to me.”

After clarifying it was the concussion spotter that removed him from Game 4, Tavares elaborated on the play, cautiously choosing his words to avoid a fine from the league.

“Pretty obvious what happened on the play. Puck’s nowhere near me. But just move on from it. Go out there and keep competing & trust that the refs are going to make the right calls.”

Given how the officiating was seemingly swayed following the public comments by Senators head coach Travis Green ahead of Games 3 and 4, it is possible that Berube’s subtle comments may help the Leafs come Game 5.
