For the first time during the 2026 Boys State Hockey Tournament, we saw a lower seed win. 3-seed Warroad beat 2-seed Delano on Friday afternoon, 6-3.

That sets up a Warroad vs. Hibbing/Chisholm Class A championship game on Saturday afternoon at Grand Casino Arena. It’s also a rematch of the 1994 title game — Hibbing wasn’t a co-op then. That’s the last time Hibbing played for a state title. Warroad won that game. Will they do it again to the Bluejackets?

Delano led 2-0 after the first period. But, Warroad caught fire in the second period.

The Warriors scored three goals in a row in less than a minute and a half. Gavin Anderson scored the first goal, while Ryan Shaugabay scored the second and Broden Hontvet the third to give Warroad the 3-2 lead.

Delano tied the game early in the third period after a Brady Kangas goal. But, Warroad soon took back the lead.

Gavin Anderson scored his second goal of the game to restore the Warriors’ one-goal lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game. They never looked back.

Warroad last advanced to the championship game in 2023, where the Warriors fell 6-5 to Mahtomedi in double overtime.

The Warriors now play top-seed Hibbing-Chisholm in the Class A championship at noon Saturday.

No. 2 Delano will play No. 4 Mahtomedi in the third-place game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
