The Philadelphia Flyers made a splash with their first trade at the NHL trade deadline, swapping forward Bobby Brink for Minnesota Wild defenseman David Jiricek.
There is a lot to like about this trade for both teams. For the Wild, they are getting a hometown kid in Brink. They are also getting someone who is a reliable third-line winger with a solid two-way game.
The Flyers are getting a project player. Jiricek was once a highly touted prospect, selected 6th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022, picked one spot behind Cutter Gauthier. In 2024, he was looking for a fresh start, and he got traded to the Wild for a prospect, a first, second, third, and fourth-round pick.
Despite giving up a load of draft picks for him, the Wild could never give him the playing time he needed to make it work in Minnesota. His struggles with defensive consistency, coupled with below-average to poor skating, have him bouncing between the AHL and NHL. Now, he is getting his second fresh start.
Jiricek’s potential still makes him a worthwhile project. He has a cannon of a shot and thrives at the point on the power-play. He was taken 6th overall for a reason, and is just 22 years old. There is still a lot of room for him to grow to be a legitimate top-four, if not top-pair, defenseman.
So, the Flyers traded a safe player who will give you roughly 40 points a season in exchange for a high-risk, high-reward defenseman.
What the Brink-Jiricek trade means for the Flyers
Next season, the Flyers will have three U25 defenseman on the right side, all of whom have top-four potential and are former first-round picks. Jamie Drysdale will be 24 when next season begins, and was the 6th overall pick in 2020. David Jiricek will be 22 when next season begins, and was the 6th overall pick in 2022. Oliver Bonk will be 21 when next season begins, and was the 22nd overall pick in 2023.
The Flyers’ potential on the right side of their defense is very high. They could become a very fun unit to watch.
Outside of Bonk, the Flyers really lacked any top-end defensive prospects. Despite getting his second fresh start and being a big project, Jiricek remains a high-end defensive project, so it fills a big need in the prospect pool as well.
Jiricek will have a lot to work on, including his skating and defensive consistency. However, we saw Jamie Drysdale’s development path, and Danny Briere made it clear that he sees a similar path for Jiricek.
“I think a little bit about Jamie Drysdale,” said Briere. “Totally different style of players, but I think about the development of Jamie Drysdale, where they both came in at 18 years old, was probably a little too early to turn pro… we went through a learning curve with Jamie. I expect kind of the same thing with David.”
Beyond adding a defensive prospect, trading Brink also frees up a spot on the wing. Briere did mention Alex Bump as someone who is next up in line for a call-up, so maybe we see him make his highly anticipated NHL debut sooner rather than later. It will also give Matvei Michkov the chance to get back on the right wing.
All in all, I think this was a win-win trade for both teams.
