The sands are running quickly through the hourglass. Where once there were weeks and days, there are now minutes running faster and faster as the 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline nears.

There are teams such as the Minnesota Wild, who are all in. There are others, like the New York Rangers, who are all out. And then, there is the unique situation of the Pittsburgh Penguins, as general manager Kyle Dubas quietly shops the aisles looking for damaged goods at discount prices and affordable young players with a long time before their expiration date.

The deadline began in earnest late Thursday when the Washington Capitals shocked everyone by trading stalwart defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks for a 2026 or 2027 first-round pick.

Carlson has been part of the lifeblood of the Capitals, suffering through the inexorably painful losses to the Penguins before finally winning the Stanley Cup in 2018, and everything since.

It would seem Washington GM Chris Patrick learned a lesson from his bitter rivals and didn’t hesitate to move a pillar of the team for a healthy return.

While the Penguins faced the Buffalo Sabres Thursday (a 5-1 Buffalo win), Buffalo GM Jarmo Kekalainen was busy. Earlier Thursday, defenseman Colton Parayko rejected a trade to Buffalo, so Kekalainen pivoted to Logan Stanley.

Buffalo snared Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets for prospect Isak Rosen, defenseman Jacob Bryson, a 2027 second-round pick, and a conditional 4th-round pick in 2026.

In more moves directly related to the Penguins’ playoff push, the Columbus Blue Jackets acquired forward Conor Garland from the Vancouver Canucks. The cost was a second-rounder in 2028 and a third-rounder this year.

Columbus is three points back of the Penguins.

The Detroit Red Wings traded for David Perron, giving the Ottawa Senators a conditional fourth-rounder.

As of publishing, there have been no credible rumors or even whispers regarding the Penguins.

Bill Guerin strikes again.

**11:59 a.m.: 🚨🚨🚨🚨 The league announces that Evgeni Malkin will have a hearing today for his blitzkrieg bop slash on Rasmus Dahlin.

Update: It is a phone hearing, which means a smaller suspension than in in-person. The guess here is four games.

12:00 p.m.: Double 🚨🚨🚨🚨 Sidney Crosby is on the ice for practice. It’s an optional with about 14 guys on the ice, but that’s still an encouraging sign for Crosby and the team.

12:16 p.m.: TRADE. Elliotte Friedman first on the trade. The LA Kings sent Corey Perry to Tampa Bay for a second-round pick.

12:52 p.m.: Per multiple reports, Jordan Eberle signs two-year extension with the Kraken, $5.5 million per season.

1:10 p.m.: Jonathan Marchessault and Erik Haula are not skating for the Nashville Predators today at practice…

It’s quiet. Tooooo quiet.

1:35 p.m.: No announcements, no rumors, no “getting close” reports. It’s stone cold silence from all of the national types.

1:46 p.m.:

Sounds like #GoAvsGo and #LeafsForever engaged again on Bobby McMann.

We’ll see where it goes.

1:54 p.m.: TRADE. Finally, eh? Nik Deslauriers to Carolina, per Elliotte Friedman. Frank Seravalli reports the Flyers are getting a late round pick. Darren Dreger reports for ‘Futures.”

2:10 p.m.: Flyers claim Luke Glendening off waivers.

Friedman reports there is momentum building for the New York Islanders to acquire Brayden Schenn from the St. Louis Blues.

2:16 p.m: PENGUINS TRADE! Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings for a third-rounder.

Soderblom is a nice player who had a great preseason and early part of the season, earning some top-six minutes, but has settled into a bottom-six type role. He’s also 6-foot-8. More to come.

You can read about the trade here.

2:34 p.m.: TRADE. It’s official. The Islanders have acquired Schenn for a first, a third, and a prospect.

**That makes the Islanders quite a bit better. If the Penguins hang onto their playoff spot, a matchup against the Islanders is likely.

On the Pens’ roster or in the org. . .
Soderblom (6-8)
Brazeau (6-6)
Mantha (6-5)
Geno (6-5)
St. Ivany (6-4)
Pickering (6-4)
Solovyov (6-3)

2:48 p.m.: Ristolainen is off the market. The Flyers didn’t get their price and Anthony DiMarco reports they closed the book on potential trades.

2:56 p.m.: The last two players dangling on the market are St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk and Calgary Flames center Nazem Kadri. The reported issue with Kadri is the Flames’ unwillingness to eat salary.

3 p.m.: AND THERE’S THE HORN.

That’s it. No mas. Finito. Done. –30–. 86’d.

3:03 p.m.: TRADE. Looks like Toronto and Seattle beat the buzzer. Bobby McMann to Seattle for a 2027 second and a 2026 fourth-rounder.

3:06 p.m.: TRADE. Second buzzer beater. The Detroit Red Wings make the big splash by getting Faulk from St. Louis.

AND Ryan Strome from Anaheim to Calgary.
