Connor Bedard and head coach Jeff Blashill are usually the first ones on the ice, but Saturday morning brought a massive twist to the Chicago Blackhawks practice.

Reports from the facility indicate the veteran bench boss was missing without an immediate explanation. Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times noted the absence right away.

Anders Sorensen stepped up to run the drills and pushed the pace. He demanded solid execution from a young roster trying to find its footing.

The front office remains entirely tight-lipped about the sudden development. The lack of clarity has the fanbase buzzing with wild speculation ahead of the weekend.

No explanation for Blashill’s absence

Chicago is currently sitting with 52 points in the Central Division standings. It has been a difficult campaign defined by growing pains and brutal defensive lapses.

Bedard remains the absolute focal point of the franchise. With 57 points already in the bank, the sophomore sensation is single-handedly carrying the offensive output.

But even a superstar cannot mask the structural flaws of a rebuilding club. Chicago desperately needs to improve their transition game to escape the basement.

Sorensen is no stranger to taking command of the locker room. He knows exactly how to manage this specific group and keep the energy high.

Over his NHL career, Blashill has built a reputation for preaching strict defensive structure. His unexpected absence leaves a temporary void in the daily preparation.

The Blackhawks have a different looking roster after the NHL trade deadline, sending out a bunch of players including captain Nick Foligno.

Management is expected to provide an official update on the bench boss shortly. Until then, the boys in the room are just keeping their heads down and working.

It will be interesting to see if Blashill will be present during the Blackhawks next game or if he will be absent.
