The Avalanche are playing Minnesota at noon and Nazem Kadri will be in the lineup. What are the conditions of the first-round pick Colorado sent to Calgary? Also, the Florida Panthers had a lot of trade discussions but they ended up keeping everyone together.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — March 8.

Colorado Hockey Now

The day has arrived. It’s been 1,351 days since Kadri last played for the Colorado Avalanche — the night they won the Stanley Cup in Tampa Bay. This afternoon, Kadri returns to the lineup as the Avs take on the Minnesota Wild less than 48 hours after trading for him.

If the game feels extra early, it’s because it is. Colorado and Minnesota will drop the puck just after 12 p.m. local time, which in itself is an early game. Mix in the fact that the game begins nine hours after daylight savings, without even a day to readjust to the time change, and you’re basically looking at an 11 a.m. start in terms of the players’ biological clocks.

The Avs included a 2028 conditional first-round draft pick in the trade for Kadri. This came a day after they traded a conditional 2027 first-round pick to Toronto for Nic Roy. The conditions in the Roy deal are simple. It’s top-10 protected and gets pushed to 2028 if Colorado somehow collapses next season and falls into the bottom 10 of the league.

If that’s the case, here’s what happens to the draft pick that Calgary would get from the Avs.

Around The NHL

Florida Hockey Now: Florida had conversations about pending UFA AJ Greer. He didn’t end up getting dealt. They also, surprisingly, discussed moving Sergei Bobrovsky. That didn’t happen either. It looks like the Panthers are going to try to keep the band together for at least another season. Let’s see how they do between now and July 1 to make that happen.

Ottawa Hockey Now: Did the Senators do enough at the trade deadline? Warren Foegele scored in his Senators debut, but it’s still a worthy question.

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings needed help, and they got it on the blueline from Justin Faulk. They also needed a center, but the market didn’t materialize. Did Steve Yzerman play his cards right?

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: It was a tough loss for the Penguins, as they still await the return of Sidney Crosby while also now having to juggle a lengthy suspension to Evgeni Malkin.
