Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs are in absolute free fall. Head coach Craig Berube is out of answers, and the fan base is letting them hear it.
Seven straight losses. That’s the ugly reality right now in Toronto.
The boo birds were out in full force at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night. The Tampa Bay Lightning cruised to a 5-2 victory, leaving the home crowd entirely disgusted.
Fans have officially had enough of the sloppy play and the total lack of urgency. Paying top dollar to watch a lifeless product on home ice will always spark outrage.
Berube faced the media after the final horn and addressed the hostile environment directly. He didn’t sugarcoat the reaction from the stands. In fact, it was a mature response from a coach who knows what the fans come to the arena for.
“Hey they pay good money to come watch us and they wanna win just like we do. That’s part of the game everywhere,” Berube said.
He’s right about the passion of the market. But the patience in this city is completely gone, and the frustration is boiling over onto the ice.
Toronto sits at a miserable 27-26-11 on the season. They’ve been completely flat since before the Olympic break, failing to generate any meaningful momentum.
The transition game is currently non-existent. The defensive structure is constantly collapsing, surrendering odd-man rushes at an alarming rate during the third period.
With just two goals averaged per game over this current skid, the offensive output has totally vanished. You can’t win in the NHL when your highest-paid stars are routinely held scoreless.
Berube was hired to establish physical structure and strict accountability. Right now, that exact system looks entirely broken against divisional rivals.
Players appear visibly disconnected on the bench when they fall behind early. The energy is completely flat, and the pushback is nowhere to be found.
Management is watching this massive collapse closely. Missing the playoffs is a completely unacceptable outcome for a roster carrying this much elite talent and heavy salary.
Because the on-ice results remain so poor, Berube’s job security is now openly questioned. The locker room desperately needs a spark before this campaign is officially wasted.
They pack their bags to face the Canadiens on Tuesday night. Another embarrassing effort on the road might force the front office to make a drastic coaching change.
