Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has publicly addressed the team’s first big off-season decision and offers up his thoughts on Brendan Shanahan’s departure from the organization.

Following another disappointing playoff exit, the Toronto Maple Leafs have already begun making changes within the organization.

Head coach Craig Berube recently spoke about Shanahan’s departure, offering respectful and heartfelt reflections on their time working together, as per Nick Barden on X:

“It was a tough day. I was in constant communication with him throughout the season, and here’s a guy that knows about winning and was obviously a great player. I love talking to him about hockey on a daily basis and just being around him. He was around us a lot, which was great,”

Berube also extended his best wishes to Shanahan:

“Wish him all the best, but my time with him was excellent and I’ll miss him.”

Notably, neither Berube nor Treliving were involved in negotiating the high-cost contracts given to the Leafs’ “Core Four,” a roster-building approach that has led to concerns about top-heavy spending and a lack of depth scoring.

For many fans, a shake-up is long overdue. After years of playoff frustration, the hunger for meaningful change in Toronto has never been stronger.
