It may not have been the highest scoring, or most action packed game airing on ESPN tonight, but for the Red Wings, it had a lot more importance than scoring 7+ goals and giving the crowd a throwback bench brawl. The Red Wings upended the New Jersey Devils 3-0, shaking off back to back losses to the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers, even after losing their captain earlier in the week and starting netminder after the second period.

The Red Wings came out hot, with Mo Seider scoring an early goal firing a wrist shot from the blueline past Jacob Markstrom. New Jersey would come back with some hard shots early in the second, but James van Riemsdyk was able to tip in another shot from Seider on the power play, extending the lead to 2-0 halfway through the second period.

However, it looked for a moment like the Red Wings might have had the wind taken out of their sails heading into the second intermission

John Gibson was injured late in the second period, exiting with what appeared to be a lower body injury after Lucas Raymond was knocked into him by Timo Meier. Gibson finished the period, however Cam Talbot would finish the game, and later the shutout. Helping Talbot to secure the win was the new look Red Wings defense, featuring Justin Faulk, making his debut in a Red Wings uniform.

Faulk had a couple of dangerous scoring chances throughout the game, showing why Yzerman was willing to part with so many picks and prospects.

“It’s an exciting challenge, you get to come to a team that’s trying to do some damage and get in the playoffs and win a lot of games.” Faulk said.

Takeaways

The Red Wings had a solid “get right game” and proved the resilience of their group by finishing out the game and winning, even after Gibson was injured. This same team squandered a 3-1 lead earlier this week, and it looks like they’ve learned their lesson. The Red Wings were relentless throughout the game, and scored in all three periods. Rookie Micheal Brandsegg-Nygard, back from his stint in the AHL, brought plenty of energy to his line and gave Jack Hughes a reason to remember his three part name.

Key Stat

Mo Seider finished the night with three points, scoring the Red Wings first goal and assisting on both of the subsequent tallies. Seider has eight goals this year, one short of matching his career high of nine. The young German also leads Detroit in time on ice, shutting down some of the best players in the league, and has been one of the best defenseman in the league over the past two years.

Key moment

Dominik Shine got his first career NHL goal to put the Red Wings up 3-0 over the Devils. Shine is one of the longest tenured players in the organization, and the captain for the Grand Rapids Griffins. This was his 14th NHL game, and his goal put the game solidly away for the Red Wings, with New Jersey not electing to pull the goaltender late in the game due to the scoring margin.

“There’s a ton of guys like me who work their ass off in the American League, do whatever it takees, y’know, fight, grind. It just feels really good.” Shine said.
