Trade deadline week was a busy one for the Philadelphia Flyers, but the expected moves were not made. However, the moves that were made helped create roster space for two newcomers while bringing in a new prospect to the organization.
Both the prospect called up and the prospect received from the Bobby Brink trade scored in their respective debuts on Saturday.
Around the league, we have more deadline talk, including the future of one team’s top defensive prospect. We also look at some missed trades and a high-scoring, high-penalty-minutes brawl in Buffalo.
Get all of it and more on the 3/9 edition of the PhHN Daily.
Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers called up one of their more exciting prospects on Saturday: 22-year-old Alex Bump. He made his highly anticipated debut on Saturday vs. the Penguins, getting to take his rookie lap in enemy territory at PPG Paints Arena.
His debut did not disappoint, as he scored his first career NHL goal in the Flyers’ 4-3 win over the Penguins.
Bump was not the only player to score in his debut. David Jiricek made his debut with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday and scored a game-tying goal on the power play. Check out Jiricek’s first goal in the Flyers organization.
And finally, the trade deadline is over. This will be the last time we talk about it until next trade deadline season approaches. The Flyers made a flurry of moves. Each move made was great. However, was it enough? I broke down my opinion of the Flyers’ trade deadline on Saturday.
NHL Rumors & News
New Jersey Hockey Now: The New Jersey Devils had a quiet NHL trade deadline. Despite their spot in the standings, New Jersey did not sell, nor did they buy. They just stood pat.
However, one of the bigger rumors surrounding the Devils was their reported willingness to move young defenseman Simon Nemec for a top-six forward. James Nichols writes that following those rumors, Nemec’s future with the Devils seems more uncertain than ever.
San Jose Hockey Now: One of the rumors surrounding Nemec was a swap for William Eklund of the San Jose Sharks. Sheng Peng broke down the San Jose side of the big trade rumor.
Montreal Hockey Now: Were the Montreal Canadiens on the brink of something huge? Montreal GM Kent Hughes said they went down to the wire on a trade that they spent most of their time on at the deadline. When asked who it was, Hughes said, “Maybe you’ll know in the summer.”
Forever Blueshirts: Was Vincent Trocheck the player the Habs almost landed? There’s certainly a real possibility, as he was definitely out there. Despite the rumors, Trocheck will remain in New York. He discussed the ups and downs of the rollercoaster trade deadline week.
Sportsnet: The Lightning and Sabres played one of the highest scoring hockey games I have seen. A combined 15 goals led to a thrilling 8-7 win for the Sabres. But that was not the only entertainment on the ice in Buffalo. It was fight night at KeyBank Arena, with over 100+ penalty minutes given out on Sunday.
