It seems Pittsburgh Penguins right-handed defenseman Jack St. Ivany is close to returning to the NHL.

Monday morning, the team assigned St. Ivany to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a 14-day conditioning assignment, which is typically the last step for players who have missed months, to rejoin the NHL team.

The WBS Penguins have six games in the next two weeks, and St. Ivany will be able to practice with the team this week before his first potential game against the Hershey Bears on Friday.

This season, the 6-foot-4 defenseman earned his way onto the NHL roster, but has suffered a pair of long-term injuries, including what appeared to be a hand-injury while blocking a shot Jan. 25 against the Vancouver Canucks. He also suffered a preseason injury which kept him out until December.

St. Ivany, 26, played in 17 NHL games this season with seven assists.
