Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan delivered a massive update after veteran goaltender John Gibson left last night’s game with an injury.

The crowd went completely silent late in the second period when disaster nearly struck. Gibson absorbed heavy contact in the crease after an opponent shoved a Detroit skater directly into his legs.

The veteran netminder stayed down on the ice for several tense moments. You could feel the panic radiating from the Red Wings bench. It was the kind of thing that only happens to teams that are used to having the worst luck.

Losing a starting goalie at this stage of the schedule is an absolute worst-case scenario. Gibson eventually skated off under his own power, but the concern was obvious.

Backup Cam Talbot stepped up admirably in relief to finish the contest. He slammed the door shut, securing the victory and giving the defensive corps a chance to breathe.

The immediate aftermath left fans bracing for a long-term stint on injured reserve.

A Massive Break for Detroit

Postgame panic quickly turned into cautious optimism in the visitor’s locker room.

“He got hit in a bad spot and didn’t feel good after that happened,” McLellan said. “He should be fine, I would think.”

That simple statement changes the entire trajectory of the upcoming road trip.

Detroit is fighting tooth and nail to secure their standing in a loaded Eastern Conference. Gibson has been an absolute workhorse since arriving in the Motor City.

The 32-year-old is sporting a solid .906 save percentage through 40 appearances. He has already banked 23 wins and four shutouts for his new club.

Carrying a $6.4 million cap hit, Gibson was acquired to provide exactly this type of elite stability. The front office made a massive bet on his durability to anchor the back end.

This roster desperately needs their undisputed number one back between the pipes for the final stretch. The playoff race leaves no room for weak goaltending.

Expect the medical staff to handle his recovery with extreme caution over the next 48 hours. The Red Wings dodged a major bullet, but the margin for error is shrinking fast.
