Auston Matthews’ Maple Leafs future suddenly feels shaky, and Toronto can’t afford another Mitch Marner exit disaster.
Toronto already lived the nightmare once. Mitch Marner reached the end, controlled the process, and the return felt light for a player of his caliber.
The warning making the rounds is simple. If the room keeps trending the wrong way, the Matthews timeline gets loud, fast.
Sportsnet’s Michael Amato basically said the Leafs need to protect themselves. Get clarity early, or risk watching a superstar walk into leverage.
“The Leafs captain can sign an extension in the summer of 2027, and Toronto will want to know what Matthews is thinking sooner rather than later,” Amato on Sunday. “If the Leafs again look like a team nowhere close to the playoffs, Matthews could decide he doesn’t want to stay long-term.”
That’s the part Leafs fans hate hearing, because it sounds familiar. They waited too long on Marner, and the market never fully paid up.
Matthews is signed through 2027-28. The key date is summer 2027, when he can start extension talks.
That’s not far away in NHL years. If the Leafs look like a team spinning its wheels, the captain can decide he’s done waiting.
And Toronto’s record right now is the fuel on the fire. A 27-26-11 skid line does not scream contender.

If Matthews ever hints at wanting out, the Leafs can’t repeat the Marner wait-and-hope approach. They’d need real assets back, not a consolation return.
Tuesday’s next game suddenly matters more than two points. It’s another measuring stick for belief, and belief is exactly what Toronto is running out of.
