WINNIPEG, Manitoba — The surging Ducks are playing like a team on a mission.
Alex Killorn, Ryan Poehling and Jackson LaCombe each had a goal and an assist to lead the Ducks to a 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night, their eighth win in the past 10 games.
Tim Washe also scored for the Ducks, who scored three times in a 1:44 span of the second period. Lukas Dostal made 12 saves for the Ducks (36-25-3), who rebounded from a 4-0 loss to St. Louis on Sunday.
“We’ve got a good mix, we’ve got good balance,” Ducks coach Joel Quenneville told NHL.com. “We know we can score goals, and tonight is a good thing to bounce back to, about knowing that we can check too.
“We want to do one thing – we want to make the playoffs. That’s our priority, that’s our goal. You don’t want to look past our next opponent (Thursday at the Toronto Maple Leafs).”
Morgan Barron scored for Winnipeg (26-27-10). Connor Hellebuyck had 31 saves for the Jets, who saw their three-game win streak and six-game point streak (4-0-2) halted.
After a scoreless first period in the Ducks outshot Winnipeg 8-2, the Jets opened the scoring at 5:04 of the second when Barron notched his 10th of the season, deflecting an Elias Salomonsson one-timer past Dostal.
The Ducks quickly flipped the script with their midgame flurry.
Jansen Harkins took a shot from the right circle that was saved by Hellebuyck with his right pad. The rebound came out diagonally, and Washe beat Jets defenseman Haydn Fleury to the puck, banking it off the left post and in to level the score at 6:24.
Killorn then swept the puck toward the net from the left point and Poehling deflected it into the net as he skated through the slot for a 2-1 lead just 14 seconds later.
“We always talk about stacking,” Poehling told NHL.com. “I thought [Ducks forward Jeffrey Viel] did a great job of just being net-front, kind of blocking the guy, and then I got in the top there, and [Killorn] just threw one on net. We always try to tip-in, and that one ended up going in. It happens a lot throughout the game, and that one just ended up going in.”
The Ducks scored again at 8:08 after Poehling forced a turnover at the Winnipeg blue line. The puck went to Killorn for a 2-on-1 going the other way. Killorn opted to shoot from the right circle and sent it into the far side of the net to extend the lead to 3-1.
“I thought we played great all night in terms of keeping the puck behind them, and then just forechecking above them and creating plays,” Poehling told NHL.com. “So that was one where we were on top of them and they were a little tired, and I just got back, got a good stick on it, and [Killorn] made a good play from there.”
The Ducks’ three successive goals are the team’s fastest three goals scored in more than six years, since the Ducks last did it in 1:37 in a 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Dec. 27, 2019.
The Ducks increased their shot advantage to 28-7 after two periods.
LaCombe sealed it with an empty-net goal with 26 seconds left as the Ducks improved to 21-0-0 when leading after two periods.
“This has been one of our most complete games when you look at three periods,” Killorn told NHL.com. “A lot of games, we’ve been down and had to come back. We were down here tonight, but for a majority of the game, we played the right way. It was a great game for our team. I think it’s been our best full game. We didn’t make any stupid turnovers. They’re going to get chances, it’s going to happen, but I thought we limited them as much as we could.”
The win keeps the Ducks in first place in the Pacific Division, while extending a hot run for goaltender Dostal, who has now won 13 of his past 15 games. The Ducks have won 15 of 19 games (15-4-0) dating to Jan. 13, when they were coming off a nine-game skid (0-8-1) that began with a 3-1 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 22.
“A month ago, it was a different situation. Then we go on a run, and now we’re in first in the Pacific,” Killorn told NHL.com. “You try not to think about it too much, but it’s just one of those things that it’s so tight, every game is so important. Points, even at the end of games when it’s tied, points are so important that you need to get them when you can.”
The Ducks outscored the Jets 12-6 in three games this year.
