After a complete embarrassment vs. the New York Rangers on Monday, the Philadelphia Flyers had a huge bounce-back 4-1 win vs. the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.
“I think we owed an effort for the fans,” said Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet about needing a good game for the fans after the rough losses to the Rangers and Mammoth. “I thought a lot of guys showed up tonight, getting into scrums and fighting back in the sense. It was one of those types of games. I think basically everybody was involved and helped each other up, especially in a division game.”
It really was a complete effort, with everyone showing up.
The Flyers had an all-around team effort in the win. Even if some players did not end up on the scoresheet or were not extremely noticeable, it seemed like every player got involved, one way or another.
This was one of the more fun games to watch this season. Let’s look at some player grades.

Flyers grades from Wednesday Win
Owen Tippett – What’s better than an A+? Tippett deserves 15 of whatever is above an A+ is
Owen Tippett was absolutely everywhere on Wednesday. He had a goal, an assist, 6 shots on goal, drew a penalty, threw his body around, got involved in scrums, and showed off his speed. Seriously, what wasn’t Tippett doing? His many breakaways led to great chances for the Flyers.
Not to mention, he played a solid defensive game and contributed on a handful of positive penalty kill shifts. Tippett was an all-situations player for the Flyers on Wednesday. It was fitting that he got to score the empty-netter to ice it.
He is proving just why he is so valuable to the team.
Trevor Zegras – A+
Trevor Zegras played a great game on Wednesday. Specifically, it was one of his better ones since February began. Zegras has been playing center full-time in the past couple of games. Seeing him make this kind of stride against a gritty opponent is a great sign for the future of keeping him at center.
“I think Trevor is getting traction [at center]. He’s barking orders now, like who to go to and what… I thought he had a good game today at center,” said head coach Rick Tocchet. Zegras scored a goal, and a big one at that. He now has three points in his last three games, all since the move back to center.
Sam Ersson – A
This season has not been ideal for Sam Ersson. He needed to turn things around at any point this season, even if it is too late to save the season as a whole. Ersson only started in one of the Flyers’ first six games after the break. He got a period of playing in relief of Dan Vladar on Monday night, where he did not allow a goal.
Ersson came up big for the Flyers, especially in the early stages of the third period. He turned in a 21-save night vs. the Capitals. It was not a flashy performance, but it was steady, and a much-needed night for the Swedish netminder.
Jamie Drysdale – A
Jamie Drysdale had a great game. His defense has clearly taken a massive step forward from last season to this season. Now his offensive game has shown significant development. Drysdale has looked like a completely different beast lately. His offensive bag was on full display on Wednesday.
He used excellent patience to hold and wait until he picked his spot and scored the Flyers’ third goal of the game. There was a play where Drysdale was skating toward the half-wall, stopped on a dime, and somehow fired a rifle of a pass that would have set Matvei Michkov up for an easy tap-in, but he just missed his stick. But the play itself was insane. He also had a couple of just plain good attempts from the slot.
A lot to like from Drysdale.
Nikita Grebenkin – A+ Rat
Nikita Grebnkin’s play may not have been as noticeable on Wednesday as it has been recently. That’s not to say he wasn’t good; he just was not making as big of plays as he has been, especially in the previous two games.
What made Grebenkin noticeable was the fact that he was an absolute pest. He seemed to be seriously irritating the Capitals, and was doing it with a massive grin ALL GAME. Here are some clips I found.
A+ rat game from Nikita Grebenkin on Wednesday.
