If you’ve never seen a five-minute major for goaltender interference before, now you may have.
At the end of the second period in a tightly contested game between the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday at Ball Arena, Nathan MacKinnon was assessed a five-minute major for goaltender interference, as he collided with Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram while trying to tip home a Brock Nelson pass. MacKinnon collided with Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse, which looked like it might have played a role in most of his body connecting with Ingram, who left the game.
As with any five-minute major, the refs reviewed the call while on the phone with league representatives in Toronto and after an extended review, the call was upheld, leading to MacKinnon being ejected from the game. As the refs announced their decision to the sold-out Ball Arena crowd, boos rained down but there was nothing changing their decision. The Avalanche had already lost Ross Colton in the second period due to an upper-body injury, forcing them to play the remainder of the game with just 10 forwards.
After the game, one which the Avalanche dropped 4-3 in regulation, it was all anyone wanted to talk about, and it’s safe to say very few in the Avalanche locker room agreed with the call.
“I think Nate makes an effort,” Nazem Kadri said. “He’s diving across the top of the crease to try to get out of the way. That’s part of the rule, for the player to at least make some sort of attempt. There was clear contact, and I have no idea how that was a five-minute.”
Coach Jared Bednar did not even think it should have been a penalty at all.
“To me, I look at that, I check the overhead first and he’s going to go where his toes are pointed and they’re going to the top of the crease with Ingram in the bottom of the crease until Nurse makes contact with him, and that’s what causes the collision,” Bednar said. “To me, I’m looking at that right away, I don’t care if he’s injured, not injured, it’s a severe crash, not a severe crash, it’s not a penalty. If you put guys in your own goalie, it’s not a penalty. That’s the way I see it.”
The Avalanche head to Seattle on Thursday, and unless MacKinnon is suspended, he’ll be in the lineup.
