Following the United States’ dramatic gold medal win in men’s hockey at the Olympics, it has been so difficult to get a Team USA jersey that you’d think goalie Connor Hellebuyck was guarding them.
The replica sweaters sold out quickly following the tournament because Nike, which handles the manufacturing of hockey merchandise for Team USA, apparently underestimated the demand that would be fueled by the Americans’ upset of Canada in the gold medal game.
Fanatics announced on its website that it is now restocking “one final production run” through Nike, “with no further restocks planned,” which will give fans one last chance to purchase the jerseys. The problem is, the NHL season could be over by the time they ship. The Fanatics website promises only that the jerseys will be shipped no later than July 29. Nike did not respond to a request for comment this week about the jersey shortage and delays.
When browsing for jerseys on the NHL’s official online shop, Fanatics customers receive the following message: “Team USA Hockey jerseys sold out fast following their historic tournaments. Fanatics has secured one final production run from its vendor partner for fans who missed out. This allotment is expected to completely sell out with no further restocks planned. These jerseys will require additional time to produce and ship to customers later this summer. If that timeline works for you, pre-order now.”
Retailers such as Fanatics get their licensed Olympic hockey jerseys directly from Nike, which controls the supply chain. They can’t make their own because they aren’t licensed to create the jerseys.
The jerseys currently available for pre-order on the site include Hellebuyck, who stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced in the gold medal game, and Jack Hughes, who scored the golden goal in overtime. The jerseys are priced at $229.99, and also include team captain Auston Matthews, as well as Matthew Tkachuk, Charlie McAvoy, Quinn Hughes and Dylan Larkin.
While the jerseys aren’t expected to ship until this summer, other merchandise — such as sweatshirts, hoodies, shirts, and autographed pucks and sticks — is regularly available for purchase.
