Radko Gudas has now taken out two MCLs this season — the Maple Leafs just announced Auston Matthews is done for the year with a Grade 3 tear and a quad contusion as a result of this hit on Thursday:
Gudas is having a phone hearing for the hit today, which allows only up to a five-game suspension.
Gudas, of course, was the one who injured Sidney Crosby in the Olympics, an injury that Crosby’s Team Canada teammate Mitch Marner told SportsNet Pittsburgh on Thursday was a Grade 2 MCL sprain.
I asked Crosby after his return from the Olympics if he had heard from Gudas at all after the injury.
“I didn’t, no.” Crosby said. “I mean, I don’t have a problem with the play. I think he was trying to be physical and step up and play hard as any defenseman would. It just went the wrong way, as far as on my end of it, I don’t think he should feel the need to reach out or anything like that. It’s hockey, and that stuff happens. Unfortunately, it’s one of those things.”
Gudas is sure racking up some of “those things.”
