A spot in next weekend’s Big Ten hockey championship game is on the line Saturday evening in Ann Arbor, Michigan, when No. 10 Penn State (21-12-2, 12-10-2 Big Ten) visits No. 1 Michigan (27-7-1, 17-6-1 Big Ten) in the Big Ten semifinal round. Penn State will be looking to stir up a little magic in Yost Ice Arena similar to last season’s postseason visit, but Michigan will be out to ensure a repeat of last season’s postseason doesn’t play out.
Penn State swept a best-of-three first-round series in last year’s Big Ten tournament to help boost its shot at making the NCAA tournament, and eventually making a run to the Frozen Four. The Wolverines have been one of the best teams in college hockey all season, and they have taken out some frustrations on Penn State along the way. Michigan took the regular-season series with Penn State with a 2-1-1 record and claimed 8 of the 12 possible points between the two teams. That included a sweep in Yost a month ago with a shootout victory and a regulation victory the following day.
Penn State celebrated a 4-2 win on its home ice back in November, a day after being blown out by a 7-1 margin in the first meeting of the year with the Wolverines. It’s probably safe to say Michigan had that game circled on its schedule after last season’s Big Ten tournament.
Michigan comes into this game with the nation’s highest scoring average, with Will Horcoff leading the team with 23 goals and Michael Hage leading the Wolverines in scoring with 49 points. Both players are first-round NHL draft picks, and 13 overall draft picks.
Michigan’s roster may be one of the most balanced in the nation, but Penn State is not without a little sizzle on the roster. Matt DiMarsico picked up his 100th career point in Penn State’s quarterfinal victory over Minnesota, and Aiden Fink was quite involved in the scoring efforts with a goal and two assists in the win. Star freshman Gavin McKenna played well in his first Big Ten postseason game after becoming the first freshman in program history to reach 50 points in a single season.

Penn State and Michigan are each heading to the NCAA tournament in a few weeks, regardless of what happens on Saturday, and this could eventually be a possible NCAA tournament preview of sorts. If so, Penn State will hope to prove it has what it takes to take down one of the best teams in the country.
