The Detroit Red Wings’ work to create young goaltending depth was acknowledged when Trey Augustine and Sebastian Cossa both cracked the top 20 of TSN scouting guru Craig Button’s recently released Top 50 affiliated prospects.
Button ranked Michigan State junior Augustine fifth on his list, while Grand Rapids Griffins standout Cossa was listed at No. 19. Augustine is officially the No. 1 goalie on the list. However, the story points out that Montreal’s Jacob Fowler had been ahead of Augustine (third on the list) until the Canadiens had recalled him a few days before the list was published.
Augustine was 20th on last season’s Button list and Cossa wasn’t on it.
The list only considered players not on NHL rosters. That means Red Wings Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Axel Sandin Pellikka are not on the list. ASP was sixth last year.
Overall, the Red Wings showed well on Button’s list. Minnesota-Duluth’s Max Plante was 27th and Everett Silvertips left wing Carter Bear was 42nd. With four players on Button’s list, the Red Wings are among the top teams.
The other Atlantic Division team that had four was the Montreal Canadiens. Their four Michael Hage at No. 6, Alexander Zharovsky at No. 20, David Reinbacher at No. 28 and Bryce Pickford at No. 38. If you assign point value based on their ranking: Montreal had cumulative ranking of 92 for their four prospects and Detroit was at 93.
The Utah Mammoth also had four, including Tij Iginla at No. 1 and Caleb Desnoyers at No. 9, Dimitri Simashev at No. 21 and Michael Hrabel at No. 40. Their combined ranking is 73.
University of Michigan player William Horcoff, the son of Detroit assistant general manager Shawn Horcoff, is the No. 50 player on Button’s Top 50.
