There’s never a good time for the Detroit Red Wings to play the Stars in Dallas. Certainly, playing in Dallas minus four regular forwards seemed like a recipe for disaster for the Red Wings.
Instead, it was somewhat of a moral victory for the depleted Detroit squad.
The Wings rallied from a 2-0 third-period deficit to claim a point in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Stars on Saturday. Detroit finished 1-2-1 on a four-game road trip.
Thomas Harley’s goal 2:06 into overtime proved to be the difference on the scoreboard.
Detroit was missing three centers – captain Dylan Larkin, Andrew Copp, and Michael Rasmussen – as well as winger Michael Brandsegg-Nygard through injury.
Wyatt Johnston opened the scoring for Dallas in the first period. Later in the frame, newly acquired Michael Bunting netted his first goal for his new team during a Stars power play.
Simon Edvinsson got the Red Wings on the board in the third period. Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger stopped his shot, but then accidentally knocked the puck into the net with his trapper.
OETTINGER 🚨
Simon Edvinsson credited with a much-needed goal as Jake Oettinger accidentally puts the puck in his own net. Nice play by Seider to get Edvinsson the puck.

Dallas (14-0-1) extended its points streak to 15 games, a franchise record. The Red Wings are 0-2-1 over the past three games.
The Stars are 10-0-1 through their past 11 home games. Detroit has dropped 13 successive games at Dallas, going 0-9-4 in that span. The Red Wings have been outscored by the Stars 56-24 over that span.
The Red Wings have dropped to eighth overall in the NHL’s Eastern Conference with 80 points. Detroit is one point ahead of Columbus and five clear of Ottawa. Both the Blue Jackets (one) and Senators (two) hold games in hand on the Wings.
The Red Wings weren’t the only team on the ice that was missing significant personnel. Dallas was without key forwards Mikko Rantanen, Roope Hintz, and Tyler Seguin.
Takeaways
The short-staffed Red Wings suited up 11 forwards and seven defensemen . . . Key Moment
Trailing 2-0 with 1:13 to go in the second period, a Ben Chiarot point shot hit the inside of the right goal post behind Oettinger. The puck skidded across the goal line and slid harmlessly away.
