The Boston Bruins picked up a huge 3-2 shootout win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday.

Boston trailed 1-0 midway through the second period and 2-0 midway through the third period. Yet, it was Charlie McAvoy who scored both goals, as Boston forced overtime and eventually won in a shootout, as Fraser Minten scored the lone goal in the shootout in the ninth round.

“One shot at a time. It’s fun to win games like that at this stage of the year,” goalie Jeremy Swayman said on Saturday as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage about Boston’s win. “It is exactly what we wanted to start this road trip off with, is a win. We know how big these points are. No matter how it gets done, that’s all we care about.”

It was McAvoy’s first multi-goal game since December 2024, and Bruins head coach Marco Sturm had plenty of praise for his star defenseman.

“You always need a driver, in the room, off the ice, on the ice,” Sturm said. “He has a little swagger now, especially after the Olympics. It’s nice to see, because you need those drivers. Especially when they get rewarded, it’s even better.”

The win is also extra important as the Ottawa Senators, who are chasing Boston for the final Wild Card spot, won earlier in the day. So, Sturm is glad his team was able to battle for the win and a much-needed two points.

“Big road game,” Sturm said. “Every point is huge. To start off a road trip like that, it’s huge.”

Boston will return to the ice on Monday on the road against the New Jersey Devils.
