The Trey Augustine hope of starting his quest to win an NCAA championship by helping Michigan State win a third consecutive Big 10 title was abruptly ended by an overtime goal.

The fifth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes altered the Detroit Red Wings prospect’s plans by upsetting Michigan State 3-2 in OT Saturday on a goal by Felix Caron. He beat Augustine on a one-timer from the top of the circle at 2:36 of overtime.

The ousted Spartans must wait until Sunday, March 22, to be awarded an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Augustine (drafted 41st in 2023) is one of the Red Wings’ top prospects. TSN’s Craig Button recently named him the No. 5-ranked prospect on his list of Top 50 affiliated prospects. The Red Wings wanted to sign him last season, but he chose to stay at Michigan to make another run at an NCAA championship. The No. 16 Cornell team upset The No. 1 Spartans 4-3 at last year’s NCAA tournament. Augustine had 17 saves.

Future Plans

The South Lyon native has played brilliantly for USA in international competition. Augustine helped the Americans win back-to-back medals at the World Junior Championships. He owns five international medals and holds the U.S. record of 12 wins at the World Junior Championships. He played for USA at the senior World Championships in 2024 as the 19th teen-age goaltender to compete at that event.  Augustine played three games and showed one win and one loss (1.37 GAA and a .929 save percentage.)

Augustine will likely sign with Detroit when his college season is over and join the Grand Rapids Griffins. Next season, Sebastian Cossa should be in Detroit. Augustine would be in Grand Rapids with Michal Postava, another intriguing prospect.

The Detroit organization hopes Augustine has success in these playoffs.  What the organization and Detroit fans don’t want to see is the Spartans to stumble. Augustine could decide to play his senior season.
