The Edmonton Oilers picked up a key 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks, but the result came under the shadow of a growing injury list. Head coach Kris Knoblauch addressed the situation after the game, urging his players to rise to the challenge as the team pushes toward the NHL playoffs.
Speaking to reporters after the win over the Sharks, Knoblauch accepted the reality of injuries while pointing to opportunity. “You’re always going to have injuries, and one injury is another opportunity for somebody else,” he said, referring to the injured players, including Leon Draisaitl.

Knoblauch recalled last season’s struggles, when constant changes made it hard to settle combinations and define roles before the playoffs.

“We had the trade deadline, then right after the deadline, we were just losing guys all over the place,” Knoblauch said. “And it was difficult to gain momentum or find out what our lines were going to be and everybody’s role going into the playoffs. And eventually we did in the LA series, but it was almost too late.”
This time, the coach sees a different path. “Having some adversity and missing some guys is okay for a team. As long as we have guys capable of stepping up, and I believe we do, then we should be all right,” Knoblauch added.

Leon Draisaitl’s injury setback and other Oilers’ problems
The biggest blow came earlier in the day when the Oilers confirmed Draisaitl will miss the Sharks game. They later confirmed that he is out for the rest of the regular season with a lower-body injury.
The star forward ends his campaign with 35 goals and 97 points in 65 games. His absence leaves a major gap in Edmonton’s lineup, with uncertainty around his return for the playoffs.

The injury list does not end there. Mattias Janmark is also out for the season, while Curtis Lazar and Colton Dach remain on injured reserve. Ty Emberson is listed as day-to-day, further testing the team’s depth.

Despite the setbacks, Edmonton responded on the ice. Zach Hyman and Max Jones scored in the third period to seal the comeback win. Contributions came from across the lineup, showing the kind of depth Knoblauch wants to see.
With the playoffs approaching, the Oilers now face a clear test. Their success may depend on how well new roles are filled in the absence of key players.
