Two of the league’s best teams meet again

After beating the division-leading Avalanche last time out, the Dallas Stars now turn around to face the other top team in their division, the Minnesota Wild.

Those three teams top the Western Conference and rank among the top five in the league. As the three jostle for seeding in the Stanley Cup playoffs, these games between them take on an outsized importance.

Evenly matched foes

Tomorrow’s game is the third encounter this year between the Stars and Wild. The first two games were split, with one regulation win to each team. What’s more, both teams won their games by the exact same margin.

In their Oct. 14 meeting, Dallas won on home ice by a 5-2 margin. The Wild returned the favor two months later, winning 5-2 on Dec. 11 in Minnesota.

Now both teams have an opportunity to take an edge in the season series. The two teams also have one more scheduled meeting after tomorrow on April 9 during the last week of the regular season.

Wyatt Johnston and Miro Heiskanen’s impact

Johnston and Heiskanen are among Dallas’ most important players on any given night and both have shown up against Minnesota this year. The pair enter Saturday with three points each in two games against the Wild this season.

In the early-season win, Johnston earned the first star of the game with a goal and an assist as Dallas romped to a 5-2 victory. In the next meeting, it was Heiskanen’s turn to shine. The Finnish defenseman cropped up with a goal and assist that night, including a shorthanded goal that briefly gave Dallas the lead in the second period.

If Dallas is able to knock off Minnesota, they’ll likely do so with further contributions from the pair.
