Maple Leafs’ top defensive prospect Ben Danford opens up about really developing the violent side of his game, working on his timing for open ice hitting.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have built a reputation for going all-in at the trade deadline in hopes of pushing deep into the playoffs.

While that approach often sacrifices higu draft picks and top prospects, one name has emerged as a clear standout in their pipeline: Oshawa Generals captain Ben Danford.

Widely regarded as the Leafs’ top defensive prospect, Danford had a strong year in the OHL, albeit only posting 5 goals and 25 points in 61 games. But, it’s his defensive prowess and physicality that truly took a leap this season.

Danford credits new Oshawa Generals defensive coach Patrick Sexton for helping refine his game, particularly his ability to deliver impactful hits. In an interview with Mark Masters on X, Danford revealed how he’s been approaching that physicality.

“Looking for those open ice hits and not chasing them or anything. I think hits like that can change the game and the energy.”

He also spoke about the importance of timing and awareness:

“Looking at their feet, seeing if there’s a head down, it’s kind of a feel thing.”

Ben Danford Continues to Showcase Top Defensive Abilities

While Danford continues to refine his offensive game, his defensive instincts, physical edge, and shutdown style perfectly align with the brand of hockey head coach Craig Berube likes in his players.

As the offseason begins, Danford is a long shot to crack the Leafs’ roster next season. He’ll come to training camp ready to make his mark this fall, but another year in the OHL is the most likely outcome for him — though the future certainly is bright for the 19-year-old blueliner.
