It seems Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov is finding new ways to score points every night.

On Saturday, he did something for the first time in his 12-year career during the Lightning’s 5-2 road win over the Edmonton Oilers.

As the Lightning killed off the first half of a 5-on-3 Oilers power play in the second period, Kucherov exited the penalty box. Tampa Bay defenseman J.J. Moser found him with a perfect pass at the Edmonton blue line, and Kucherov beat Connor Ingram for a breakaway goal.

Kucherov’s first career short-handed goal just happened to give him the NHL points lead. He passed Oilers star Connor McDavid with his 117th point of the season.

The highlight was shared by the X account of the “Spittin’ Chiclets” podcast.

While Kucherov is a mainstay on the Lightning power play — 34 of his points have come with a man advantage — he rarely gets on the ice during penalty kills.

“That was a hell of a pass by ‘Mo’,” Kucherov said, per NHL.com. “I’m happy to play PK if needed. I think I proved it today that I can play, and we’ll see.”

McDavid entered the game leading the NHL with 115 points, one more than Kucherov. The Oilers scored first in the final seconds of the first period when McDavid tipped in a wrist shot from Evan Bouchard.

Then Kucherov scored points on the Lightning’s first four goals, scoring two of them to push his season total to 40. He has four 40-goal seasons.

Either McDavid or Kucherov has won eight of the past nine Art Ross trophies, given to the league’s leading scorer. Kucherov has won the past two after McDavid won the previous three.

Kucherov enters the home stretch with 118 points, two more than McDavid and four more than the Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon. Kucherov’s team has 14 games remaining to the Oilers’ 11.

Tampa Bay stands at 90 points, four fewer than the Atlantic Division-leading Buffalo Sabres. Edmonton also is in second place with 77 points, three fewer than Pacific Division Anaheim Ducks.
