This comes after the Lightning went through the worst stretch of their season, losing six of their previous seven games. Tampa Bay is just four points back of the surprise Buffalo Sabres for the top spot in the Atlantic Division standings. Even though Calgary is near the bottom of the Pacific Division standings, the Flames have been playing well lately, going for their third win in a row. Calgary is also trying to bounce back against a big 5-1 loss against the Lightning in Game 1 from Tampa Bay on Nov. 26. Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy was in complete control, earning the first star of the game with 31 saves. Calgary outshot Tampa 32-23, but the game wasn’t close, with the Lightning scoring the first four goals of the game in the first period to win their fourth game in a row. Brandon Hagel and Nikita Kucherov both had a goal and an assist.

The Lighting beat the Seattle Kraken and Vancouver Canucks 6-2 on this West Coast swing and kept it rolling big with a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Nikita Kucherov put up two goals and two assists for the first star of the night. He became the NHL’s scoring leader over Edmonton’s Connor McDavid in the process. That’s even though McDavid scored the first goal of the game. But the Lightning scored three straight. Edmonton got within one early in the third, but Kucherov created a late two-goal lead to ice the game and sweep the Oilers in that series finale.

Calgary is also coming off a dominant victory over another Florida team, beating the Panthers 4-1 on Friday. Dustin Wolf was strong in the net, earning the first star with 24 saves. Victor Olofsson scored his first goal for the Flames after being traded for Nazem Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline. Florida got within a goal early in the third, but Morgan Frost scored on the power play late in the period to create some breathing room and help the Flames sweep the back-to-back defending champions this season.
