Philadelphia Flyers

Philly Hockey Now: Needing as many wins as possible, the Philadelphia Flyers went on a California road trip, taking on three teams in desperate need of wins in a span of four days. Making the task even harder for Philly, they went into the final two games of the three-game road trip without three starting forwards, needing a defenseman to step up and play up front.

Well, the Flyers swept the road trip. They picked up six incredibly crucial points before returning home for four games. Nearly every game has a must-win tag on it. That is now 7-straight wins on the road for the Flyers.

The Flyers wrapped things up with a 4-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. It was not the prettiest of wins, but there were plenty of great efforts throughout the game. In our postgame blog, we looked at some of those efforts, both group and individual, as well as one game-changing moment.

Before that game, the Flyers pulled off an improbable win vs. the LA Kings. It was the first game of 11F/7D, and the second leg of a back-to-back. The cards were stacked against the Flyers, but this team willed its way to another win, keeping them afloat.

They’re at 11F/7D because Sean Couturier (UBI), Denver Barkey (UBI), and Luke Glendening(LBI) all missed both the Kings and Sharks games. There has been no further update on their status. Barkey did take warm-ups on Saturday, but didn’t play. He is likely the closest of the three to return.

With the team off on Sunday, there will likely be a practice on Monday ahead of their showdown with the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. A more in-depth update should be provided then.

And finally, let’s piece together some post-deadline rumors. Were the Flyers offered a pick and a cap dump for Ristolainen?

NHL rumors & news

USCHO: Merrimack pulled off a stunner in the Hockey East tournament, beat Boston College 2-0, eliminated them, and effectively ended BC’s season. The Eagles sit outside of the magic 16 (really 12, with bid stealers) in the NPI rankings, so their season is done.

We saw the flood of NHL prospects leave Boston University for the NHL when its season ended. Could Boston College be next?

The Boston Bruins have a handful of prospects at BC, including top center prospects James Hagens and Dean Letourneau. Are the Bruins officially on Hagens watch?

Sportsnet: The NHL, AHL, and CHL are reportedly nearing an agreement that would allow 19-year-old CHL-drafted prospects to be eligible to play in the AHL. But, it can’t be just any 19-year-old CHLer. The new rule specifies that only first-round picks can be eligible for the AHL at 19.

Man, the Flyers could have used this with Luchanko about a year earlier.

Boston Hockey Now: The two Eastern Conference Wild Card teams faced off last night. With the Flyers still having three games against the Red Wings, a Bruins win is what was needed. Thank you, Boston. The Bruins handled business and gave the Flyers some real help. Jack Studley breaks down the B’s latest win.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Some not-so-helpful points. Metropolitan teams keep earning two points. The Penguins are the latest to go out and grab points, beating Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 in a shootout.

Philly needs to keep winning, but they’re going to need someone to fall back.
