10 days ago, the Philadelphia Flyers had a chance to insert themselves into the Eastern Conference playoff picture with a win vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets were just four points ahead of the Flyers in both the Wild Card and Metropolitan standings.
Well, the Flyers forced overtime against the Blue Jackets but couldn’t get the win. Despite getting a point, allowing Columbus to get two points, let alone points at all, made the loss seem crushing.
Instead of dwelling on the loss and letting it get to the team on, the Flyers answered in the best way possible. Following that game vs. Columbus 10 days ago, the Flyers went on a three-game California road trip and returned home with six massive points.
Despite the loss to the Blue Jackets not long ago, the Flyers’ resilience still has them in it.
They did not let the loss get to them. Instead, the Flyers know that they have to keep pulling wins together to have a chance at making the postseason.
“We see the teams ahead of us winning,” said Flyers’ alternate captain Travis Konecny after the team’s OT win vs. the LA Kings on Thursday. “Just play desperate… We’ve got to keep applying pressure [to the teams ahead]. It’s up to them. If they keep winning games, good for them. But we’re going to keep applying pressure and let them know that if they slip, we’ll be right there.”
On Tuesday, the Flyers will have a chance to keep winning and maybe cause a team in front of them to slip.

Where the Flyers’ playoff chances stand as of now
Tuesday’s game is a pretty big one for the Flyers’ playoff hopes. Since the Blue Jackets beat the Flyers in overtime on Saturday, March 14th, they have not grown their lead over the Flyers. Columbus (85) sits just 5 points ahead of Philadelphia (80) in the standings. 85 points is good enough for third in the Metropolitan division.
A regulation win would cut that to a manageable 3-point gap with 12 games left in the Flyers’ season, a game in hand over the Blue Jackets. Per MoneyPuck, a regulation win jumps Philly’s postseason odds to 18.2%, where a loss could drop its chances to just 6.3%.
So, once again, the Flyers face the Blue Jackets in a must-win game. This time, there is no next matchup. This is the last time Philly will meet Columbus this season.
Aside from the Blue Jackets (85), the Flyers (80) will be battling it out with the Islanders (85) and Capitals (79) for the last spot in the Metropolitan Division. Pittsburgh (86) has held on to a Metropolitan spot for a while, and could slip. However, with Sidney Crosby healthy again, they should hold on. But never say never.
You could even consider the Canadiens (86) a part of the dog fight with the Bruins and Red Wings on their heels for third in the Atlantic.
In the Wild Card, the Bruins (86) and Islanders (85) own the two spots in the East, for now. The Red Wings (84) are not behind, nor are the Ottawa Senators (83). Philly (80) and Washington (79) round out the list of contenders.
So yes, it’s still an uphill battle for the Flyers. But still, they’re staying alive game-by-game and keeping themselves in the fight. It’s worth noting that aside from the Canadiens, the Flyers have a game in hand on every team listed above, aside from the Capitals and the Islanders. They have two games in hand on them.
So, what does the remaining schedule look like?
Remaining schedule
Let’s break down the Flyers’ remaining schedule.
8 Games remaining vs. teams in the Eastern Conference dogfight
3 remaining games vs. Red Wings (1 home, 2 away)
1 game remaining vs. Blue Jackets (home, 3/24)
1 game remaining vs. Capitals (away, 3/31))
1 game remaining vs. Islanders (away, 4/3)
1 game remaining vs. Bruins (home, 4/5)
1 game remaining vs. Canadiens (home, 4/14)
2 Games remaining vs. playoff locks
1 game remaining vs. Stars (home, 3/29)
1 game remaining vs. Hurricanes (home, 4/13)
3 Games remaining vs. teams out, or almost out of the picture
1 game remaining vs. Blackhawks (home, 3/26)
1 game remaining vs. Devils (away, 4/7)
1 game remaining vs. Jets (away, 4/11)
The Flyers face a tough end to the season with a back-to-back against a surefire playoff lock and a team that seems to be leading the dog fight. Making the challenge even more difficult, they play in Winnipeg the game before the back-to-back.
However, the bulk of their remaining schedule is against teams that are right there in the fight with them. That said, if they want to cause teams to slip, they have 8 chances to do so themselves.
Having minimal games against teams that are postseason guarantees is always beneficial. Even then, having three games against teams out of the race will help balance it out.
Regardless of who the Flyers are playing, it all boils down to one thing. Philly needs to keep winning and control what it can control if it wants a chance at the playoffs.
That has been the mindset, and it continues on Tuesday vs. the Blue Jackets.
