James Hagens is turning pro.
The seventh overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft will join the Providence Bruins on an amateur tryout agreement (ATO), the Bruins announced Monday night.
Hagens, 19, finished his sophomore season at Boston College on Friday. He recorded 47 points (23-24–47) in 34 games and ended the year on a 13-game point streak. He spent the majority of the season playing on the wing.
Hagens also led the Hockey East in scoring and is a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.
He had 37 points (11-26–37) during his freshman season, when he spent time on a line with Ryan Leonard and Gabe Perreault. He was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team.
The Hauppauge, NY native represented Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championships in both 2025 and 2026, as well as the U-18 World Junior Championships in 2023 and 2024.
“We’re very excited to have James join the Bruins organization and take this next step,” Don Sweeney said in a press release. “James is an important part of our future, and this is a great opportunity for him to get immediate experience at the professional level in Providence and continue his development, while keeping all options open.”
This is not an entry-level contract. He can still sign an NHL deal and join the Bruins roster, much like Charlie McAvoy did for the 2017 playoffs.
The Providence Bruins rank first in the AHL. They have clinched a playoff spot and sit nine points ahead of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (PIT) for first place in the Eastern Conference.
They have 11 games remaining in the regular season.
Hagens will report to Providence’s practice on Tuesday morning at 10:15 AM. They play the Thunderbirds (STL) on Wednesday night at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA, where Hagens is expected to debut.
